Vaughan, ON

Vaughan is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is well-known its slogan “The City Above Toronto”. Vaughan is located in the region of York, just north of Toronto. Vaughan remained the fastest-growing municipality in Canada between 1996 and 2006. It is the fifth-largest city in the Greater Toronto Area, and the 17th largest city in Canada. It is the only municipality in York Region that has City status. The population of Vaughan is about 297,000 residents. And it is still keep growing.

The primary centers of Vaughan are: Kleinberg, Maple, Thornhill and Woodbridge. There are a lot of visitors and tourists coming to Vaughan from all the parts of the Greater Toronto Area. They all are attracted to the famous McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg, to the shopping at Vaughan Mills or to the Paramount Canada’s Wonderland entertainment.

Vaughan City Council consists of nine members: the mayor, three regional councilors, and five local councilors. The head of Vaughan council is represented by the mayor. He is also an official representative on York Region Council. The three regional councilors of Vaughan fulfill the tasks for local level of government along with the regional one.
City councilors of the Civic Centre are located in the community of Maple.

The opening of the City's new City Hall was held on September 25, 2011. The building is named after of late Mayor Lorna Jackson. The new Civic Centre is famous for the fact of correspondence to a LEED Gold Standard, the second highest environmental classification.

The first Ontario municipality to have a Youth City Councillor, Vaughan is famous for the encouragement policy for the young initiatives. The members of the youth city councillor has no right to vote, but they are supposed to represent the youth of Vaughan every six months. The Youth City Councillor is encouraged to fulfill new proposals and initiatives, holding debates and conferences. Nevertheless, usually the proposals of youth councillor are usually rejected but, after the Vaughan Youth Cabinet amended its proposal, Council accepted the recommendation.
