Markham, ON

Markham is a city in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada. Markham's population in 2015 was estimated at 342,000.

The city got its name from the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, who named the area after his friend, William Markham.

The first European settlement in Markham occurred in 1794.

Markham has over 1,100 technology and life-sciences companies, with IBM as the city's largest employer.

There are about 10,000 companies in Markham. More than 400 of the Canadian head offices are located in the city – including IBM, Aviva Insurance, AMD, Bank of China, GE Digital Energy, Honeywell, Huawei Technologies, Lenovo, Johnson & Johnson, Toshiba, Honda and Hyundai. Markham is a home to more than 1,000 technology and life sciences companies. These two sectors employ over one-fifth of the total workforce of 162,000.

Markham is home to several large malls of 100+ stores.

Markham shares the same climate as Toronto. The average temperature in summer is about 25 °C (77 °F), and in winter it is about −5 °C (23 °F). The highest temperature recorded was 37.8 °C (100 °F) on August 8, 2001, and the lowest temperature recorded was −35.2 °C (−31 °F) on January 16, 1994.

Markham has two airports, operated by two different organizations: Toronto/Buttonville Municipal Airport and Toronto/Markham Airport. There are almost 400 km of cycling routes in the city. Public transportation is provided by Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Viva (a type of bus rapid transit), York Region Transit (YRT) and GO Transit.


The main medical facilities of Markham are Stouffville Hospital and Shouldice Hospital.

Markham has several public and Catholic high schools. All have consistently scored high on standardized tests and have some of the highest rate of graduates attending universities.
